The Confidence to… Fail

Yes, it takes confidence to fail, because it takes confidence to try in the first place.  If you try something, there is always a chance of failure.  Of course you can try something and not fail, but you risk failure with any endeavor.  Often it’s our inner voice that tells us what we can or cannot do.  A confident inner voice tells us to go for it, and a defeated inner voice tells us not to bother.  Remember this- great athletes lose sometimes, the best entrepreneurs have ideas that don’t work, and the best teachers don’t to get through to all students.  If you are afraid to risk failure then you won’ t even try so you’ll never know what you’re capable of.  You have to be confident to succeed, because you have to be confident to try.  Often the reason people don’t try new things, start new relationships, apply for certain jobs, or pursue their dreams is because of the fear.  I’ve had several clients tell me they won’t apply to grad school or for a certain job or even ask someone on a date, because they don’t feel like they’re good enough.  In these cases, the inner voice is telling them they will fail, and success and happiness are for other people but not them.  This just isn’t true.  I encourage you to challenge your inner critic, take steps towards your dreams, and don’t be afraid to fail!  Keep this Nike quote in mind and go for it: “The only one who can tell you ‘you can’t’ is you.  And you don’t have to listen.”
